Biswanath MP re-ordered start of Rampasha to Lamakaji renovation work

After a long delay the remaining 9 kilometers of Rampasha to Lamakaji public road work has re-started. However local residents complained about irregularities during the renovation work.

The residents made their allegations on the spot of Rampasha to Lamakaji on 25th March when the local MP Yahya Chowdhory visited. He talked to concerned locals, authorities and construction firms about the irregularities found in the renovation work.

While the remaining road works were delayed, it turns out during this period large pot holes have appeared in the existing completed part of the road. Even though in 2015 there was 3 kilometers of road works completed from Biswanath it appears the majority of the road remains uncompleted. This has led to many accidents on this road.

On 24th March 2017 in memory of Late Noor Miah (son of Haji Asok Uddin) an electric cycle rickshaw was donated to Darus Salam Jamia Masjid, Tengra (Ali Para), Lala bazar, Bishwanath, Sylhet.

According to the Masjid Committee this cycle rickshaw could potentially generate an income of 4,600-5,600 taka per month for the masjid. This could pay for a permanent qualified Tajweed teacher to teach the local children and regular monthly payment towards the Imam’s wage. The remaining funds will cover any repair work and some money could be saved for future education projects.

The Masjid committee members (including their family) are working together to make this project a success for the children, youth and our local community. Source of this story is Darus Salam Jamia Masjid.

Flood water submerging over 3000 Acres of land in Biswanath

Continuous rain, flash floods and water from mountain areas have resulted in over three thousand acres of cropped land to be covered by flood water. During the current season, different areas of the district have been affected with roads, houses and farmland all covered by water causing destruction and losses to many of the infrastructure, businesses and residential properties in Biswanath.

The largest source of rice, the farm lands of Chowl Dhonir Awar has been submerged in water causing damage to many rice crops. If the stagnant water does not recede quickly then there will be far more losses to the habitants and farmers of those areas affected by the flood water.

On the other hand, Basiya river filled with water, as a result there are fears that the re-excavation work may be disturbed.

Right now, at the market a bag of 50kg rice is being sold for between 2100 to 2700 taka. If the rice farming losses continue then the cost of rice at the market is expected to rise further. As a result, the poor and the middle-class people of Biswanath is most likely to be impacted by the rise in costs of rice and other staple food products.
